A Marketing Lesson From Donald Trump

This morning I watched John Oliver (a political commentator and comedian) rip shreds out of DT…watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnpO_RTSNmQ, funny and scary at the same time.

If Donald wins the republican nomination, it will be hairy times ahead.

Trump as president…surely not!

Yet even though Trump, is wildly inconsistent and ridiculous most (actually all) of the time…there’s a great marketing and business lesson tucked
under all his circus clown antics.

More on that in a bit.

Following on from last weeks emails where the focus is mainly on
service-based-business owners, today I want to talk about
a very powerful concept.

Be a leader, not the expert!

What do I mean by this?

Well, when it comes to selling services many business owners
want to show off their expertise. Fine and dandy, only that experts
are two a penny these days.

In fact the legal definition of an expert witness is someone who’s knowledge on a particular subject is beyond that of an average person.

But look around your competitors. All of them will
claim to be an expert. They claim to be most the most qualified,
have the best education, have the best portfolio, have the biggest clients.
Look at me, I’m the MOST expert yada yada.

But here’s the thing…

being the most expert doesn’t necessarily win the client.

Why?

Because…

a leader will trump (seriously couldn’t help it) an expert all day long.

People listen to leaders. They follow their advice. They buy into
their way of thinking. They buy their products.

Just look at Mr Floppy Head Trump.

His expertise for the job in hand are at best totally inadequate,
at worst…dangerous for society as a whole.

Yet he may or may not win. That’s not the point.

The point is the attention he commands, the following he has been
able to bind together. Love or loathe him, he has a fighting chance
mainly because there’s enough nutcases out there who see him
as a genuine leader. Other higher qualified and more credible
candidates have been drowned out by his continuous rhetoric.

So the lesson to learn from Donald Drumpf is to become a leader
in your business…not just an “also ran” expert.

How, pray tell do you become a leader?

Simple.

Get people to follow you.
